What I use during Daily 5

Word Work remains the favourite choice during Daily Five (after listen to reading on the laptops). Let me show you our word work with pictures...

The word work "I can" posters remind students of their choices during word work. These are stuck on with velcro and I swap the activities every month or so. When I took this photo, the choices for word work were stamping the words, this roll and graph activity "Race to the Top" by From the Pond, and then using these wooden laptops to write their words in chalk:
I got these wooden chalkboards from one of those 'Catch of the Day' deal websites ages ago for about $6 each. I superglued a picture of a keyboard to one side. The kids have a ball typing out their words and writing them in chalk.

Another activity that is pretty much a staple in word work are these build-a-word folders I made. The kids adore them. They use the letter tiles, which are attached with little bits of velcro, to make real and nonsense words. They record the real and nonsense words in their Daily 5 book (which is kept in their book box for easy access during all D5 activities).

If you would like a free copy of this, please visit my Facebook page where it is a temporary freebie.

We do a lot of whole class word building and tracking as part of our literacy warm ups so making real and nonsense words independently was a very natural step for these kids.

I will definitely remember to put the template for these build-a-word folders on my upcoming TpT store - it's my holiday goal to have a small TpT store up and running. Stay tuned!

So what words are the kids working on during D5 time? In the word work corner I have a small whiteboard which lists the weekly spelling words taken from C2C and our weekly sight words. My school uses Words Their Way for spelling because it is differentiated but we are expected to expose the students to the weekly spelling rules from C2C, which easily fits in with word work!
